About this exam

The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 is recognised as the gold standard in academic and cultural German language certification. It's required by many German universities for international students and by cultural exchange programs. The exam is more open-ended than TELC at the same level.

Preparation tips

  • The writing section's open-ended Argumentation task requires a clear pro/con structure — outline before writing.
  • The speaking exam is individual, not paired — prepare solo presentations in advance.
  • Vocabulary at B2 requires precise register — practice formal synonyms for common words.

300 points total across 4 modules. Pass: 60% per module (no module can be below 45%).
